About Us
We are a collection of concerned citizens who live nearby. We’re dismayed by how rapidly the East Harrison Shoreline Street End has been degraded over the last few years. We want Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), who is responsible for the space, to take action to prevent further destruction and to restore the wetland.
About the Restore East Harrison Initiative
The Restore East Harrison Initiative embraces this special place and ecological gem. We appreciate accessing this space and enjoying the unique ecology of the East Harrison Shoreline Street End.
This space has long been called "hidden beach." Pictures are worth a thousand words and the pictures on this website indicate that in just a few short years, this space has gone from being "hidden beach" to "exploited Street End."
The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is responsible for managing Shoreline Street Ends. By filling out the form on the “Join” page, you are helping this effort by signaling to SDOT that you believe in restoring and protecting this sensitive ecology for everyone to enjoy. Please, help encourage SDOT to post signage about this space, protect areas that need protection, and more faithfully abide by City, State, and Federal regulations concerning maintenance and use of this space.
People who support the restoration of the ecology of the East Harrison Shoreline Street End recognize that many people who live in this and other neighborhoods enjoy running their dogs off-leash, and in the summer occasionally making fires or coming down for late night revelry. There is nothing wrong with these activities when they are done safely and legally in areas planned for those uses – but that is not possible at the East Harrison Shoreline Street End.
Some supporters of the Restore East Harrison Shoreline Initiative have participated in The Friends of Street Ends (FOSE) for years. We believe in community engagement in public spaces, and supporters have engaged in numerous community projects over the many years. In short, this group strongly supports public spaces and use. We support caring for the ecology.
Together, we can restore and protect this public space for future generations.
